The Music Ministry, headed by the Pastoral Musician & Liturgist and assisted by the Cantor & Choir Director, includes the Adult Choir, Contemporary Ensemble and Children’s Choir, as well as cantors and other resident musicians.
Members of the Adult Choir sing at both the 9:00 & 11(:15) a.m. Sunday masses during the period October-May, as well as at other special liturgical and concert events during the year, but still maintain a lighter schedule during the summer. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings, 6 to 8 PM, in season, and no audition is necessary. The Adult Choir is making a pilgrimage and concert tour of Italy in early 2013, and singers and non-singers alike are invited to join Fr. John, the choir, and fellow parishioners! (Please see the link underneath the tour photo below for full information on the tour.)
The newly-formed Contemporary Ensemble sings at the 5:00 p.m. Sunday Mass, and is especially open to middle- and high-school student singers and musicians. We rehearse Sunday afternoons before the Mass, and also lend our talents to various concerts throughout the year. Contact Tom Oram to schedule an interview and simple audition.
The Children’s Choir, for grades 1-5, is entering its third year. We meet at 5 PM Wednesdays before the evening Faith Formation classes. The choir sings at several special Masses during the year, including First Communion, and even our seasonal program The Christmas Story. No audition is necessary, but students must comport themselves appropriately and able to read (words, that is; music reading helpful but not required).
Cantors sing at all weekend masses, and resident musicians are on call for special events and liturgies. Auditions are necessary for these opportunities; cantors are generally selected from the membership of the Adult Choir.
2012-13 will mark the second full year of our “Sacred Music In Sacred Spaces” concert season, a free series dedicated to bringing our parish a wide variety of events, from para-liturgical events to recitals to concerts, in a wide variety of styles.
Music Ministry at St. John the Evangelist has already had a distinguished history, from our humble beginnings in an elementary school cafeteria to well-established reputation for excellence now 25 years later. We invite you to join us as we continue to serve our Lord in the Mass as we “sing and make music for the Lord all the days” of our lives! (cf. Ps. 27)
